Where am I supposed to go?

It all began while I was in the university library. My dad called, his voice tight with urgency, and told me to come home immediately.

When I walked in, my stepmom, Marlene, was sitting there with her son, Tyler. Tyler had just blown through every dollar Dad had given him to “start a business” in Florida. He’s 35, but he acts like he’s still in his twenties — chasing parties, harebrained schemes, and always failing.

I’m 18, but I’ve always been the responsible one.

That day, with everyone gathered, Dad dropped the bombshell. Tyler was moving in with us. Since his old bedroom had been turned into Marlene’s office, he’d be taking *my* room.

I was SPEECHLESS.

“Where am I supposed to go?” I asked, my voice cracking.

Dad waved me off. “You’ll stay on campus. It’s not a big deal. You’ll figure it out. Tyler needs stability right now.”

My throat burned. I couldn’t afford campus housing — I was working part-time just to cover books and next semester’s tuition. But Dad didn’t care.

I packed my things alone, tears slipping down my cheeks. No one lifted a finger to help. Tyler even smirked at me as I dragged out my suitcase.

“Good luck out there, kid,” he sneered.

I moved into a cramped dorm room, juggling work and studies, barely keeping afloat. It was brutal. But I refused to let Dad’s betrayal crush me.

Months later, karma finally came knocking.

One evening, out of nowhere, my phone lit up. It was Marlene. Her voice was frantic, almost hysterical:

“Nora, YOU NEED TO COME HOME. NOW!”

Against my better judgment, I went.

When I arrived, the house was pure chaos.

When I stepped inside, my jaw dropped. Furniture overturned. Beer bottles scattered across the floor. A broken lamp lay in the corner. The air reeked of smoke and stale alcohol.

And in the middle of it all was Tyler — shirtless, stumbling, screaming into a phone while two of his buddies argued in the kitchen.

Marlene rushed toward me, pale and trembling. “Nora, thank God you’re here! He’s out of control. He’s been throwing parties for weeks, burning through our money, and your father—he’s had ENOUGH.”

Just then, Dad stormed out of his office, red-faced, holding a stack of unpaid bills. “This idiot has drained us dry!” he roared. “Loans, credit cards, everything maxed out! He even used MY NAME to open new accounts!”

Tyler just laughed bitterly and threw an empty bottle against the wall. “Don’t blame me, old man. You ENABLED me. You always bailed me out!”

The room went dead silent.

I looked at Dad. For once, he didn’t argue. He just sagged into a chair, face buried in his hands.

Then his eyes lifted to me. For the first time in months, he looked… ashamed. “Nora,” he whispered, “I never should have put him before you. You’re the one who’s responsible, the one who deserved better. I made a terrible mistake.”

I didn’t say anything. I didn’t need to. My silence said it all.

By the end of the week, Tyler was gone — arrested after one of his “friends” ratted him out for fraud. Dad begged me to move back home, to forgive him, to “start fresh.”

But I just shook my head. “Home? That house hasn’t been my home for a long time.”

I turned and walked away, my suitcase in hand.

For the first time in months, I felt light. Free. Because I realized something Dad never did:

I didn’t need *his* house to build a future. I could build my own.

And I would — without him, without Marlene, and definitely without Tyler.
