Reality TV has been around for a long time. One show in particular is one of the longest-running reality shows ever and is often credited with starting the genre.
Sarah Becker, who was on the fifth season of Miami, Florida-based MTV’s The Real World, died in June 2024 after having been having problems with her mental health.
What did Sarah Becker do?
Sarah Becker was born on November 3, 1970.
After she graduated from Indiana University, she got a job as an editor, mostly for comic books.
She was also the editorial producer for skaterboardermag.com in the past.
Sarah worked at Wildstorm Comics in La Jolla, California, while she was on the show. She was 25 years old at the time.
She called herself a “19-year-old trapped in a 25-year-old body,” and MTV called her a fortress girl.
Sarah liked to skateboard and dress up as TV characters, and her MTV biography says she also collected Swatch watches and “empty Blistex tubes.”
People remember her best from her time on the show for:
In episode seven, they start a side business delivering restaurant supplies to people on the beach.
Getting into a fight with Flora, her roommate, in episode 11
In episode 13, they bring home a puppy named Leroy.
Going to Staniel Cay in the Bahamas on a plane with Cynthia, Dan, Joe, and Mike, her roommates, in episode 19.
In episode 20, they confront Melissa, who then leaves the house.
TMZ reported on June 23, 2024, that Sarah Becker had died early last week at her home in Illinois.
Sarah used to live in California, but in 2023 she moved to the Midwest.
She moved closer to her family’s house to help take care of her mom and sister, who were both sick.
The 10th of February 2024 was the day her father, Robert Becker, died.
A skateboarding accident set Sarah back even more on her plan to move back to California, and she has been having a hard time with her mental health over the last few months.
A family member confirmed the terrible news, saying that Sarah had killed herself.
She was only 52 years old.
A family member of Sarah says that she will be remembered as “selfless” and “for always taking care of others” before she took care of herself.
On Facebook and other social media sites, family and friends have started to post tributes to Sarah.
“Sarah Becker was pure sunshine…” You couldn’t help but feel warm just being around her because she was so full of life and energy. “I’m thankful for the fun times we’ve had together,” wrote Daniel Norton.
He also said, “Big hugs to all the Wildstorm family!”
“I just found out that one on the nicest people that have ever been put in my life, especially during my impressionable ages in my life has passed away,” he wrote.
“Every time I thought of her, her smile and happy personality came to mind.” We will miss you and love you. Say “RIP” to Sarah Becker, he added.
When did Sarah Becker appear on The Real World?
Sarah Becker was on the fifth season of The Real World: Miami.
This was the first season of The Real World to be filmed in the South Atlantic States of the US. It took place in Miami, Florida.
It was also the first season that wasn’t filmed in New York or California.
The first episode of the show aired on July 10, 1996, and the last one aired on December 4, 1996.
A group of people living in a house at 445 E. Rivo Alto Dr. in Miami Beach were shown on The Real World: Miami.
The three-bathroom, four-bedroom house was on Rivo Alto Island, just north of the Venetian Causeway.
The seven people on the show were:
She is 25 years old and from San Diego, California.
He is 21 years old and from Overland Park, Kansas.
She is 22 years old and from Miami, Florida.
He is 25 years old and from Brooklyn, New York.
Californian Cynthia Roberts, 22, lives in Oakland.
24 year old Flora Alekseyeun from Boston, Massachusetts
24 year old Mike Lambert from Jacksonville, Florida
In the first season of The Real World: Miami, each housemate was given a “task” to complete during the season.
The group was given $50,000 to cover the costs of starting their own business.
In the end, the group failed to start a business before their time at the house was up, even though Sarah had a lot of good ideas.
A reporter from The Chicago Tribune talked to Sarah after she was on the show in 1997.
“For me, The Real World was a six-month long vacation, I knew from the get-go that it couldn’t be a stepping stone to bigger and better things.”
“I want my own magazine someday, and I don’t think Sarah from The Real World is going to have anything to do with that,” she said then.
She also reportedly had a hard time with her first period of fame.
She said, “I kind of liked being unknown.”
People know who I am now and say, “Hey, Real World girl!” when I go somewhere. So sometimes I wear a hood when I go outside.
When did The Real World start?
The Real World’s first episode aired on MTV on May 21, 1992.
New York City was the setting for the first season of the show.
Each season after that took place in a different big city, like Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Boston, Denver, and Atlanta.
There were even seasons that took place in England, Mexico, Australia, and the Virgin Islands, among other places.
Each season had a simple premise: a small group of young adults chosen from thousands of applicants across the country would move in together.
The Real World made it clear that each participant would be from a different race, gender, sexual orientation, political or religious belief, and even level of sexual experience.
People usually think of reality TV as lowbrow, but The Real World was praised for being one of the first non-fiction shows that both appealed to and taught a young audience about modern issues, such as
Having bias
Sex and Being Sexual
Problems with Abortion
The Bible
Abuse of Drugs
Politics on AIDS and Death
Health and Mind
From May 21, 1992, to August 29, 2019, the show ran for almost 30 years.
In the past, episodes of the show were 30 minutes long. Starting in 2008, episodes became an hour long.
There were 33 seasons of The Real World, which means there were at least 614 episodes.
It was said to be based on the PBS documentary series An American Family, which followed the life of a family in California in the 1970s.
A number of the show’s cast members went on to have successful careers in the entertainment business, such as
Tami Roman is from “The Real World: Los Angeles.”
Pedro Zamora (San Francisco in “The Real World”)
Jacinda Barrett (London in The Real World)
Jamie Chung (The Real World: San Diego)
Brown Karamo (The Real World: Philadelphia)
Trishelle Cannatella worked on “The Real World: Las Vegas.”
The Real World also had two successful spin-offs, which are called Road Rules and The Challenge.
