My neighbor quickly gave me a suitcase and told me to keep it until she got back. The next day, I saw police in her yard.

Margaret, my elderly neighbor, came to my door one day, completely upset. “Please keep this safe,” she said as she pushed an old suitcase into my arms. Do not open it. My daughter will be surprised.

I didn’t understand, but I agreed. I put it in my closet and tried not to think about it. I was going to check on her in the morning, but as soon as I stepped outside, I stopped moving. There were a lot of police cars around Margaret’s house.

I tried to keep my voice calm as I stopped one of the police officers.

“What happened?”

The officer gave me a serious look as he looked at me. He carefully chose his words as he said, “There was an incident.” “Are you a friend or relative of Mrs. Margaret Collins?”

“I’m her neighbor,” I said, my heart racing. “What kind of event? “Is she all right?”

The officer thought for a moment and then lowered his voice. “It was said that Mrs. Collins was missing.” Someone called us early this morning from her daughter, saying she couldn’t reach her. We found signs that she might not have left willingly when we went to check on her.

A chill went down my spine. Margaret not there? It didn’t make sense. She looked fine, though a little tense, when I saw her the day before. It made my stomach turn when I thought about the suitcase she had given me. Her hands were shaking as she gave it to me.

I tried to keep my voice steady as I said, “I… I talked to her yesterday.” “She asked me to hold onto something for her.”

The officer’s eyes became more interested. “What did she ask you to hold?”

I slowly replied, “A suitcase,” and looked back at my house. “She said it was a surprise for her daughter and asked me not to open it.”

The officer’s face turned more serious. “Please bring that suitcase to us, ma’am.” It might be important.”

I was torn and hesitated. Margaret had been very adamant that I not open it, but she was no longer there, and the police were looking for her. I saw that I didn’t have many options. “Okay,” I said, barely able to be heard above a whisper. “I’ll get it.”

In a hurry, I ran back inside, my mind racing. What could be so important in that suitcase that Margaret had to hide it with me? Also, why did she leave right after giving it to me? I took the suitcase out of the closet and noticed how heavy it was. Then I carried it outside to the officer.

His hand signaled for another officer to join us. They carefully took my bag and put it on the hood of a police car. The first officer asked, “Is it okay if we open it here?” I said yes, even though I was scared about what they might find.

I could see that the suitcase was packed tight with clothes when one of the officers unzipped it. But there was something else going on under the clothes. The officer slowly moved the clothes out of the way, and I gasped when I saw it: neatly stacked bundles of cash held together with rubber bands. There had to be at least a few thousand dollars in there.

“What on earth…?” My mind was spinning as I muttered. “Why would Margaret have this much money hidden in a suitcase?”

The police officer looked at his partner and then back at me. “Ma’am, did Mrs. Collins say anything to you about where she was going or what she was doing with this suitcase?”

I shook my head because I was still shocked. Not really. She looked a little tense, but she said it was a surprise for her daughter. She didn’t say anything else.”

The officer made a face and motioned for someone else to bring the suitcase back to one of the patrol cars. “Thank you for your cooperation, ma’am,” he told me. “If you think of anything else that might be helpful, please don’t hesitate to reach out.”

I agreed, but it was hard for me to think straight. While the police worked at Margaret’s house, I went back inside, my mind full of questions. How did she get all that cash? And why did she try so hard to hide it from me?

After a few hours, someone knocked on my door. When I opened it, there was a woman standing there who looked tired and worried. “Hi,” she said with a weak smile. I’m Julia, and I’m Margaret’s daughter. The police said you may have seen my mom yesterday.

“Yes, I did,” I told her, feeling sorry for her… “She asked me to hold her suitcase when she came by with it.” This morning I gave it to the police.

Julia’s face changed, showing a mix of shock and confusion. She asked again, “A suitcase?” “With money in it?”

I gave a hesitant nod. “There was a lot of money inside.” “She told you it was a surprise.”

She shook her head and her face turned pale. “This doesn’t make sense.” That much cash was never in my mom’s purse. She lived on her pension, so she couldn’t have had that much cash.

I could see how upset she was, and I was just as confused. “I wish I knew more,” I said in a soft voice. “But when she brought it up, she looked really scared. Was she ever honest with you about… being in trouble or needing help?”

She looked down and bit her lip. “No, but she called me in a strange way a few days ago.” She talked about having to “take care of something” and sounded worried. When I tried to ask her more, she changed the subject. She stopped for a moment as tears filled her eyes. “Now I’m scared something happened to her, and I don’t even know where to start.”

I put out a hand to comfort her and put it on her arm. “The police will do everything they can to find her,” I stated. “And if there’s anything I can do to help, please let me know.”

I couldn’t get rid of the uneasy feeling in my gut as Julia left. It was clear that something was very wrong, and I thought the suitcase was just the start. That night, I stood at my window and looked out at Margaret’s house, which was now dark. I thought of the nice woman who had always waved at me and told me stories over tea. But now she was… gone.

The next morning, someone knocked on my door again. It was a police officer who had been there the day before this time. He said, “Good morning, ma’am,” and his face looked serious. “I have a few more questions, if you don’t mind.”

I said, “Of course,” and let him in.

He sat down and got a notepad. “Did Mrs. Collins ever mention a man named Victor Reynolds to you?”

The name didn’t mean anything to me. I said, “No, I don’t think so.” “Why?”

The officer paused, as if he or she wasn’t sure how much to tell me. Vic Reynolds is someone we’ve been looking into for a while. We think he’s laundering money and maybe doing other illegal things as well. We believe Mrs. Collins may have been “forced” to hide the money for him.

It made my blood run cold. “Margaret? Taking part in something like that? “But why?”

He said in a sad voice, “We don’t know yet.” “But she could be in real danger if she was hiding money for Victor or someone else. We need to quickly find her.”

The thought hit me like a punch. Margaret wasn’t attempting to shock her daughter. She was in a lot of pain and maybe even scared for her life. That’s why she brought me the suitcase: she wanted to hide it to keep herself safe.

As soon as the officer left, I became very determined. There wasn’t much I knew, but I was going to do everything I could to find Margaret. She was a friend as well as my neighbor. I wasn’t going to do nothing if she was in trouble either.

The police may have been trying to figure things out, but so was I. I also thought the real story about the suitcase was riskier and more complicated than anyone knew.
