Stories: Mom, don’t freak out

Mara was halfway through folding laundry when her phone lit up with her son’s name.

She smiled—until she heard his voice.

“Mom, don’t freak out,” Ethan said quickly. “I’m at the airport and my boarding pass has SSSS on it.”

The socks in Mara’s hands slid to the floor.

“SSSS?” she repeated, already walking into the kitchen like the room might have answers. “What does that mean? Are you in trouble?”

“I don’t know,” Ethan admitted. “The lady at the counter just said I have to go through extra security. They pulled me aside. I’m standing in a line with… like… three other people.”

Mara’s stomach twisted. Her husband, Greg, looked up from the table, saw her face, and instantly stood.

“What’s wrong?” he mouthed.

Mara covered the phone and whispered, “He got SSSS on his boarding pass.”

Greg blinked. “That sounds… bad.”

Ethan’s voice came again, muffled and uncertain. “They told me not to use my phone once I step forward.”

Mara’s heart pounded. “Okay,” she said carefully, fighting to keep her voice calm. “Listen to me. You are not in trouble. You hear me? You haven’t done anything wrong.”

“I know, but… why me?”

“Sometimes it’s random,” she said, though she wasn’t sure. “Just answer politely. Be patient. And call us the second you can.”

“Okay. I love you,” Ethan said, and the line went dead.

For the next ten minutes, Mara and Greg hovered like statues in the kitchen, staring at the silent phone as if they could force it to ring.

Mara’s mind raced with every horrible possibility—missed flights, interrogation rooms, her son stranded alone.

Finally, her phone buzzed again.

Ethan.

Mara answered so fast she nearly dropped it. “Ethan?! Are you okay?”

He let out a breathy laugh—tired, but alive. “Yeah. I’m totally fine.”

“What happened?” Greg asked loudly in the background.

Ethan’s voice sounded lighter now. “So apparently SSSS means Secondary Security Screening Selection. They searched my bag, swabbed my laptop for explosives, asked me where I was going, and made me take off my shoes like… twice.”

Mara closed her eyes, relief flooding her so fast she almost cried. “That’s it?”

“That’s it,” Ethan said. “The agent even joked, ‘Congratulations, you won the airport lottery.’”

Greg let out a long breath. “So you’re still flying?”

“Yep,” Ethan said proudly. “I’m actually at my gate now… with snacks. And I learned an important lesson.”

Mara’s voice softened. “What’s that?”

Ethan chuckled. “Never wear a belt with a giant metal buckle again.”

Mara laughed for the first time all morning, pressing a hand to her chest. “Text us when you land.”

“I will,” Ethan promised. “Love you both.”

As the call ended, Mara looked at Greg and finally smiled.

The house felt warm again.

And for the first time all day, the silence didn’t feel scary—it felt peaceful.
