Kissing Bugs: What They Are — and What To Do If You Get Bitten

**Kissing Bugs: What They Are — and What To Do If You Get Bitten**

Kissing bugs may sound harmless or even sweet based on their name, but these insects are anything *but* affectionate. Found mostly in the southern United States, Mexico, and Central and South America, kissing bugs (also known as triatomine bugs) are blood-feeding insects that can spread a potentially serious disease called **Chagas disease**.

As sightings increase during warm months, experts are urging homeowners to be aware of what these insects look like, how they behave, and what steps to take if you’re bitten.

## **What Exactly Are Kissing Bugs?**

Kissing bugs are nocturnal insects that feed on the blood of animals and humans. They earned their nickname from their habit of biting humans around the mouth and eyes — areas of the skin that are soft and exposed while sleeping.

### **How to Identify Them:**

* Size: About ¾ to 1 inch long

* Shape: Cone-shaped head, flat oval body

* Coloring: Dark brown or black with red, orange, or yellow stripes along the edges

* Behavior: Attracted to lights, active at night

While many insects look similar, only triatomine bugs carry the parasite *Trypanosoma cruzi*, the organism that causes Chagas disease.

## **How Dangerous Is a Kissing Bug Bite?**

The bite itself is often **painless** — people usually don’t feel it while it happens. The real danger lies not in the bite, but in what may happen afterward.

The insect often defecates near the bite site. If the parasite-containing feces enters the body through:

* scratching the bite,

* the eyes,

* the mouth,

* or an open wound,

a person can contract **Chagas disease**.

### **Early Symptoms of Infection May Include:**

* Swelling around the bite (especially one swollen eye)

* Fever

* Fatigue

* Rash

* Body aches

* Headache

* Nausea or diarrhea

Chronic Chagas can lead to **serious heart and digestive complications** years later if untreated.

## **What To Do If You Get Bitten**

### **1. Wash the Bite Immediately**

Use soap and warm water to remove any insect residue. Avoid scratching the area.

### **2. Apply an Antiseptic**

A mild antiseptic or first-aid ointment helps prevent secondary infection.

### **3. Monitor for Symptoms**

If you develop swelling around one eye, fever, rash, or flu-like symptoms, contact a healthcare provider.

### **4. Save the Insect (If Possible)**

If you can capture the bug safely:

* Trap it in a sealed container

* Do **not** crush it

* Bring it to your local health department for identification

This can determine whether the insect was a triatomine bug.

### **5. Seek Medical Care**

If Chagas disease is suspected, your doctor may order blood tests. Early treatment with antiparasitic medication is highly effective.

## **How to Protect Your Home from Kissing Bugs**

### **Indoor Prevention**

* Seal cracks around windows, doors, and the foundation

* Repair torn screens

* Reduce clutter indoors

* Keep pets indoors at night (bugs often feed on animals first)

### **Outdoor Prevention**

* Remove wood, brush, and rock piles where bugs hide

* Keep porch lights low — bright lights attract insects

* Check dog houses, kennels, and outdoor bedding

## **The Bottom Line**

Kissing bugs aren’t just a nuisance — they can pose a significant health risk. While bites are not always dangerous, the possibility of Chagas disease makes awareness crucial. If you live in an area where these insects are common, learning to identify them and knowing how to react to a bite can make all the difference.
