On Status Of Investigation

A coalition of over 20 conservative organizations, led by Heritage Action for America, urged FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr on May 14 to remove federal ownership regulations for radio and TV stations.

They argue that outdated FCC rules, meant to promote media diversity and competition, now hinder investment and innovation, leaving traditional broadcasters at a disadvantage compared to unregulated tech giants like Google and Meta.

The coalition calls for the repeal of three key restrictions: local TV duopoly rules, local radio ownership caps, and the 39% national TV ownership cap.

Heritage Action and other conservative groups emphasize that deregulation is needed for broadcasters to compete in the modern media landscape. FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr, a proponent of deregulation, argues that legacy rules restrict broadcasters while digital platforms operate freely.

While no formal action has been taken, growing support for deregulation suggests potential policy shifts depending on political conditions.

The debate continues over whether removing these regulations will foster competition or lead to further media consolidation. The future of media ownership rules hinges on political shifts and the evolving needs of local journalism
