A MUSICIAN Richard “Kinky” Friedman passed away. He was 79 years old.

The news came out on Thursday through X.

“Kinky Friedman stepped on a rainbow at his beloved Echo Hill surrounded by family & friends,” the text said.

“Kinkster endured tremendous pain & unthinkable loss in recent years but he never lost his fighting spirit and quick wit.”

“Kinky will live on as his books are read and his songs are sung,” it said.

He also wrote and went to the University of Texas at Austin.

The exact date of his death was not given.

In the 2006 election for governor of Texas, Kinky also ran as an independent.

He got 12% of the vote, which put him in fourth place out of six candidates.

CAREER IN MUSIC
The first band Kinky made was called King Arthur & the Carrots. They played at UT.

In 1966, they only made one record, which was Schwinn 24/Beach Party Boo Boo.

King Arthur & The Carrots made fun of surf music.

Kinky Friedman and The Texas Jewboys was Richard’s second band. They were formed in 1973.

There wasn’t much time for the band to stay together, and Kinky’s self-titled album came out in 1974.

Kinky went on tour with Bob Dylan for two more years.

He played music on Season 2 of Saturday Night Live after the tour was over.

In 2011, the musician went on a world tour as the main act.

Kinky has put out 18 albums so far. His most recent one, Circus of Life, came out in 2018.

OTHER PROJECTS
In the 1980s, Richard’s music career stopped moving forward, so he started writing.

He mostly wrote detective novels, which have a made-up version of himself and lyrics from his songs.

The person fights crime in New York City by telling jokes, giving advice, recipes, and charm.

He sees himself as Sherlock Holmes of our time.

Kill Two Birds and Get Stoned and The Christmas Pig are two books that Kinky wrote that did not have the Kinky Friedman character in them.

Then, from 2001 to 2005, he had a regular column there.

When he ran for governor in 2006, the column was put on hold.

However, two years later, the newspaper brought back his column every two months.

Richard ran as a Republican for Justice of the Peace in Kerrville, Texas, in 1986, but lost. That was before he ran for Governor.
